The Bulletproof Coffee Trend – by Ree Drummond

Carly here!

I tend to be late on cultural trends! I hear about them late, usually after 75% of the people I know have already partaken in them. Then I’m not real organized about “joining” the trend (takes a while to get my act together). I guess I could blame the children – it’s hard to stay on top of trends when there are noses to wipe and babies to keep from the wall outlets. But I can’t do that because I remember noticing this about myself back in the college days. One of the big clothing trends of that first year or two at the turn of the century was the UGG boot, and I was just positive the “ugly boot” would last a season or two and then sail on. So I held off on my first UGG purchase until everyone I knew was wearing them, and one especially frigid winter I decided to go ahead and purchase the tall tan one – you know, the “UGG staple” that everyone wore. (Of course, by the time I pulled the trigger on the ugly boot purchase, UGG had come out with some cuter style of their boot and everyone was wearing the “cardy” ones with the buttons up the side!) I remember wearing them that first season and thinking surely now that I finally bought them everyone will have moved on to the next thing!

So – UGG story in mind – perhaps you won’t be surprised to learn that I just discovered bulletproof coffee. I saw this very article from Ree Drummond, The Pioneer Woman, and I was so intrigued because a new variation of coffee sounded so exciting. (When you drink it 365 days of the year, a new variation is really a game changer!) In keeping with my regular practice of “googling” things I am intrigued about, I ran a search for bulletproof coffee and found all these news articles about it from six months ago. Of course! – another trend that I’m a half a year behind in hearing about!

So, in the event that you also wore UGG boots five years after everyone else, I am posting this bulletproof coffee recipe so you can try it out and see what all the fuss is about. To be honest, I wasn’t quite as crazy about it as The Pioneer Woman, but I am looking forward to throwing it in the coffee rotation and mixing up the daily routine. Bulletproof Coffee

A couple of weeks ago, I was working on my new cookbook. My friend Andy was helping me prep food and get things organized, and to charge me up for what was about to become an epic day of cooking, he made me a concoction he referred to as BULLETPROOF® Coffee. He’d seen it on Jimmy Fallon or Jimmy Kimmel or one of those late night shows, and he knew I’d be interested in trying it since coffee is my life.

I took a sip. My eyes widened.

I took another sip and said, “Oh…my…gosh.”

I took another sip and cried, “WHAT IS THIS?”

And then he told me what it was. And I’ll admit, I thought it was weird. Actually, I thought it was extremely weird. And evidently, all kinds of debate exists online about the benefits (or lack thereof) of this coffee drink, a version of which is also known as BULLETPROOF® Coffee. Some people say it’s healthy. Others say it’s a fad. Some people say it will give you an energy boost like no other. Others say this is placebo.

Me? I just say it’s magical. And I’ll just leave it at that.
